PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A dedication ceremony for veterans’ gravestones caps a cemetery restoration project led by two Girl Scouts.

The dedication takes place Saturday afternoon in the Grand Trunk Cemetery in Portland’s East Deering section.

Girl Scouts Samantha Allshouse and Kayla Theriault led efforts to clean up and rehabilitate the long-neglected cemetery. Their work, supported by city officials and volunteers, helped the girls earn the scouts’ highest honor, the Gold Award, last August.

The project includes installation of a kiosk with information about the cemetery and map of the more than 100 known burials.

Veterans honored Saturday include Crispus Graves, who served during the Revolutionary War, and five men who served in the War of 1812. The veterans were all laid to rest in unmarked graves at the cemetery between 1818 and 1860.
