“Mike” Hamel continues to be Lewiston’s real active clean sport promoter in all lines. He met with such success in the five-mile “marathon,” Lewiston’s first which was held on June 8th , which he promoted and offered a cup as a first prize for, that he now intends to hold another on a more developed scale on Labor Day, Sept. 2, the first day of the Maine State Fair. If arrangements can be made, the end of the course will be at the fair grounds. If possible the runners will do a couple of laps on the race course. It would prove a good State Fair attraction.

A large Elm tree toppled onto a house and across power lines today, interrupting traffic and causing some property damage. The tree, which fell progressively, snapped high voltage lines seconds after CMP linemen had shut off power to the area. It damaged a roof at 55 Pleasant St., breaking windows. The first two men who rushed to the scene from the Auburn police station noted where one of the three huge sections of the Elm tree had separated from the trunk and leaned heavily against a tree across the street, hovering over the house and over power lines carrying 4,000 volts of electricity. In a couple minutes, a loud “crack” echoed up and down the street and the tree gained another three feet on its downward journey. A CMP spokesman said, “If that tree had come down all at once, it would have gone clear through the roof of that building.”

With hard hats, one gold shovel and a round of applause, YWCA leaders broke ground Thursday for an $885,000 addition at 130 East Ave., Lewiston. It was 17 years ago that the YWCA built its East Avenue pool. The rest of its classes have taken place for more than 50 years at the Kate J. Anthony House on Turner street in Auburn, but the house has grown too small for an organization that serves thousands of people each year. The 11,300-square-foot addition is supposed to be complete in March
