RUMFORD — Selectmen learned Thursday night that a survey will be done to determine future use of RSU 10 school buildings.
The two schools in the Mountain Valley region mentioned most often for possible closure are Virginia Elementary School and Rumford Elementary School, both in Rumford. The Virginian school serves special needs children and is known as the Pennacook Learning Center.
Town Manager Carlo Puiia said RSU 10 Superintendent Tom Ward will come before the board to discuss Planning Decisions Inc.’s findings once the survey is complete. The company is in Portland. Puiia said that visit will likely occur in late autumn.
Ward has said that if the school board decides to close any school in the district for the 2013-14 school year, steps must begin in December.
If either of the Rumford schools are targeted for closure, and residents of the town decline to pay the extra money to keep them open, then ownership would revert to the town. Either way, selectmen will play an important role in determining the future of the two buildings.
One or two school buildings in the Dixfield area is also being considered for closure.
In other matters Thursday:
* The board scheduled a second goal-setting workshop for 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in the municipal auditorium. At the first workshop, the board began brainstorming ways to help the economy and draw tourists to the area. One of the major focal points is bringing a hotel to town, along with developing all-terrain vehicle and snowmobile trails that are closer to the business area.
* Puiia said a new sound system is scheduled for installation in the auditorium in October. He said funding for the system came through the cable TV agreement.
* The board will look into options to the crosswalk on Lowell Street in front of the River Valley Technology Center. Complaints have been made that vehicles along that street do not slow down. Among the tenants in the center is a child care business.
* Puiia said the town’s annual Citizen of the Year ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Sept. 6. The board meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
