FARMINGTON — More than $20,000 was raised in the second annual Battle for Breast Cancer Tournament recently held at Colby College.

Mt. Blue High School was one of five area high school field hockey teams that participated.

The funds, given to the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, a program of Franklin Memorial Hospital, will help working people with breast cancer who are uninsured or underinsured.

More than 100 high school student athletes participated in the round robin benefit tournament. Other high school teams who participated included Skowhegan, Winslow, Lawrence and Nokomis.

“It was really fun and to see how many teams were there supporting breast cancer. Everyone was on board,” Hanna Deon of Farmington, a junior at Mt. Blue, said as she waited for Monday’s scheduled practice to begin at Prescott Field on the campus of the University of Maine at Farmington.

Most of the regular players, those who participate in an unofficial local summer league, played in the tournament, she said.

The tournament was started last year by Paula Doughty, Skowhegan High School field hockey coach and a resident of Farmington. She talked with other coaches who held similar events in their communities.

The Mt. Blue team participated in several local fundraisers before the tournament, including bake sales, car washes and bottle drives. Some members also toured the breast care center. The team ranked third, raising about $2,000 for the tournament, Deon said.

The team is coached by Jody Harmon; the junior varsity team is led by Mary Sinclair. Deon said that the regular season begins next week with away games.

The team’s home games will take place at Prescott Field this year, she said.
