With any luck, Kyle Hewins will be on his way home before the next green flag drops at Oxford Plains Speedway.
His return to racing might have to wait a bit longer than that, however.
Hewins, driving the No. 51 car in Saturday’s Runnin’ Rebel feature at the 3/8-mile oval, had his car burst into flames as he rounded a curve. As his car crawled to a stop, Hewins tried to escape the burning wreckage, eventually appearing from inside of the vehicle under his own power.
Multiple posts on social media sites Sunday reported that Hewins was “doing well” despite the injuries, which were described as “burns to his hands and legs.”
According to a spokesperson at maine Medical Center on Sunday, Hewins was still listed in “satisfactory” condition.
He was “doing good, walking and talking and he ate a good supper,” Kyle’s mother, Brenda, posted on her Facebook page.
Fellow racer Billy Childs Jr. wrote on his Facebook page that Hewins was “in a lot better shape than I expected.”
Multiple sources have said Hewins underwent surgery on his hands Saturday night.
Attempts to reach Hewins and his family were unsuccessful Sunday night.
