“These were happy and glorious games,” proclaimed Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, at the closing ceremony of the London Games.
We all can agree with that statement. The beautifully and perfectly organized London Summer Olympics — as well as our great and amazing athletes — have excited and inspired the people of the world and, especially, us Americans.
Unfortunately, our presumptive presidential Republican nominee Mitt Romney, on his very first foreign policy trip, managed to insult the British people and their prime minister, David Cameron, by criticizing the quality of the organizational efforts for the London Games as well as casting doubt on the enthusiasm of the British people for their Olympic Games.
This prompted David Cameron to pointedly retort: “We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”
An official and personal apology to the conservative prime minister and the British people would show the world that the potential president of the United States of America and leader of the free world has some class and character, and it would ameliorate the embarrassment of the American people.
