FREEPORT — Laura Brown of West Poland was awarded a scholarship by The Maine Innkeepers Education Foundation, affiliated with the Maine Innkeepers Association at the eighth annual Tees & Textbooks event at the Senator Inn and SPA in Augusta on June 4.
Brown is a student at Husson University in Bangor. She is studying hospitality management at Husson and has been a tour guide at the Maine State Building of the Poland Spring Preservation Society. Brown has also gained hospitality skills working at the Poland Spring Resort.
Brown received the Women in Hospitality scholarship award of $2,500, sponsored by Nancy Gray, innkeeper and owner of the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport; Maureen McQuade, an owner of the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth; Kathryn Weare, innkeeper and owner of the Cliff House Spa & Resort in Ogunquit; Jean Ginn Marvin, innkeeper and owner of the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport; and Marian Burns, innkeeper and owner of Mira Monte Inn & Suites in Bar Harbor.
Scholarships are awarded after review by a selection committee who consider scholastic records, financial need, extracurricular activities and a desire to work in hospitality to Maine students enrolled at fully accredited schools with specialties in culinary arts or hotel administration.
