DIXFIELD — Selectmen are expected to accept a petition from resident Jon Holmes favoring withdrawal from RSU 10 when they meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27.
The petition, signed by more than 135 registered voters in town, according to Holmes, states:
“We the undersigned, favor filing a petition for withdrawal with the board of directors of Regional School Unit #10 and the Commissioner of Education, authorizing the withdrawal committee to expend $50,000 and authorizing the selectpersons to issue notes in the name of the Town of Dixfield or otherwise pledge the credit of the Town of Dixfield in an amount not to exceed $50,000 for this purpose.”
Holmes said this week that a proposal by RSU 10 Superintendent Tom Ward several months ago to look into merging Dirigo and Mountain Valley high schools, in Dixfield and Rumford, respectively, prompted the withdrawal effort.
“We decided to see what we could do to save Dirigo,” Holmes said. “If we could pull out of RSU 10, we would be better off financially and overall.”
Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky said Friday that if the petition is deemed legal, and not in conflict with any laws, selectmen will likely move it forward.
That means that a question on the proposed withdrawal could appear at a special town meeting or on the ballot during the Nov. 6 elections.
If approved by a majority of Dixfield voters, Skibitsky said the town likely would take the requested funds from surplus.
The petition is one of many issues facing the board.
Skibitsky said the town’s auditor, Ron Smith, will be present to discuss the recently completed annual audit, including an analysis of the current sewer rate. Also, selectmen are expected to take action on a possible fireworks ordinance.
He said some have questioned whether the town should have such an ordinance after the state legalized the sale and use of them.
The board also will be updated on a proposed wind farm project by project director Tom Carroll of Patriot Renewables. In a related matter, the results of a review of a proposed wind ordinance by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments will be discussed.
Other matters include a discussion on the Webb River Bridge construction project, and reports from public works and the water department.
