AUBURN — One of Lawrence High School’s fans hollered over the ropes and the bench at Josh Doolan, wondering aloud why he was carrying his pads as the halftime clock expired.
“Coach told me I’m done,” Doolan said. “Too overheated, I guess.”
Maybe John Hersom just figured the senior already had put in a full day’s work.
Doolan ran for two touchdowns, returned an interception for another six and set up scoring drives with two long punt returns, all in the first half of a 39-16 Eastern Class A rout of Edward Little at Walton Field.
The touchdown runs covered 9 and 7 yards. Doolan raced 47 yards with the interception and 30 and 19 yards on the returns, one to trigger his own score and the other setting the table for one of Anthony Sementelli’s two TDs.
Lawrence showed no ill effects from having to make the long bus ride a second time after thunderstorms forced postponement of the season opener Friday night.
“Last night we were ready. It worked out better for us. We got to sleep on it and we were ready and intense,” Doolan said. “Our offense was clicking. Our offensive line was fantastic. Our defense was great.”
Three second-quarter touchdowns and a 39-yard field goal by Chad Martin landed Lawrence a 30-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs padded that margin with a safety on the second play of the third quarter and another Sementelli score before emptying the bench.
Andrew St. Pierre broke the shutout for EL on a 40-yard fumble return with 10:03 remaining. Sean Ford (11-for-23, 88 yards) later found Ian Mileikis for a 10-yard score. Ford also completed both two-point conversion passes to Johnny Boyd and Quin Leary.
“We put ourselves in a corner. We threw an interception and they ran it back. We let a punt get returned. We let a kick get returned,” EL coach Dave Sterling said. “We played well at times and then we let up and gave them a good opportunity. They’re a good football team and we didn’t really help ourselves either.”
Lawrence also blocked a punt to set up a touchdown.
The Eddies didn’t produce a first down until the 6:20 mark of the second quarter, at which point it already was 20-0.
Doolan made two tackles on Lawrence’s opening defensive series, the first of five consecutive three-and-outs to start the day for the Eddies.
“After we got back last night we sat them down and said try to get your rest. The challenge at that point was to come back this morning and show they were as ready to play as they were last night,” Hersom said. “It’s a tribute to them to be able to come out and handle all that and have a first half like we did.”
Lawrence out-gained EL 205 yards to 48 in the first half and 346 to 135 overall.
Wave after wave of backs shared the load for the Bulldogs, 11 in all. Sementelli led the attack with 12 carries for 102 yards, including scoring scampers of 30 and 13 yards.
Boyd had 14 carries for 47 yards to lead EL. Caleb Spruill and Quin Bradley each had a sack for the Eddies defense.
St. Pierre pounced on two fumbles and forced a third that was recovered by Caleb Fecteau.
