The American Mustache Institute revealed Tuesday that Phoenix will host the annual ‘Stache Bash in October.

After AMI put the host city up to a public vote, the New England and Arizona chapters of the organization were in a dead heat. Online voting ended Monday.

“The vote was quote close,” Dr. Abraham Jonas Froman, AMI’s CEO, said in an email. “Total votes were nearly 10,000. (The) New England Chapter had 35 percent as compared to Arizona with 39 percent.”

Dr. Lou Jacobs, a Farmington native and head of the local chapter, had been trying to woo votes for Portland by pointing out its impeccable mustachioed resume: The city already hosts an annual mustache pageant and the International Moustache Film Festival.

But, the news is not all bad: Portland has been guaranteed a spot as host in October 2013, Jacobs said.

“I couldn’t have asked for more, actually,” he said. “This allows me to plan an epic event.” In the meantime, “there’s a lot of exciting fundraising and ‘stache/beard-centric stuff happening this year.”

Jacobs plans to begin organizing monthly American Mustache Institute “meet-ups” in Portland this fall. The bash is an annual party that raises money for charity with costumes, prizes and the awarding of the Robert Goulet Mustached American of the Year honors.
