Rumford Selectman Jeff Sterling, left, presents a Rumford Distinguished Citizens of the Year 2012-13 award to James Nicols of Mexico on Thursday night while Selectmen Chairman Greg Buccina does likewise to Billy Nicols, right, of Rumford. The brothers were awarded the distinction for lending Rumford temporary use of their company’s logging bridge to span Bean Brook. They voluntarily installed it after flooding from Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the Swain Road bridge Aug. 28 and 29, 2011.
Rumford selectmen recognized the service of several people at Thursday night’s meeting. From left are James Nicols, who with his brother Billy Nicols, third from right, were named Rumford’s Distinguished Citizens of the Year 2012-13; Ronald E. Russell, who served on the Board of Appraisers from 2004-10; Russell’s father, Ronald M. Russell, who served on the Finance Committee from 2004-10; Peggy Susbury, who served on the Rumford Public Library Board of Trustees from 1997-2012; and Dan Peare, who was a Public Works employee from 1979-2012. Not shown but also recognized were Theresa Prue, who served on the library board from 2001-10, and Spencer Couture, who served as a call force firefighter from 1975-2012.
Retired Rumford Public Works employee Dan Peare, who served the town 33 years, laughs at right as Town Manager Carlo Puiia presents him with a snowplow truck to accompany the service award he received from selectmen Thursday night.
