Even on the surface, Edward Little’s first four Pine Tree Conference games looked like a cruel joke from the schedule maker.
The Eddies opened at home with PTC champion and preseason favorite Lawrence, which scored 39 unanswered points to start the game and won going away.
Next up was a trip to Augusta for a clash with Cony, arguably the most improved team in the league. The Rams looked every part of that, rolling to a 41-13 triumph.
Then come perennial power and unbeaten Brunswick in back-to-back weeks, starting with Friday’s trip to Cameron Stadium.
It all sounds tough enough to begin with, until you factor in the significance of pass-happy Cony interrupting a first-month run of opponents who like to administer a steady diet of time-honored Wing-T.
“We know we’ve got to tighten up on our secondary coverage, and now we have to get ready to face a Wing-T offense the next couple weeks,” EL coach Dave Sterling said. “That’s part of this conference. Everybody runs something different.”
The schedule gets a little more manageable in the second half, but the assignments don’t. Farther down EL’s road are Messalonskee and its double wing, Oxford Hills’ triple option and Skowhegan’s spread.
