OXFORD — The Oxford Hills School District is offering free tutoring to eligible students who attend Oxford Elementary School.

Kathy Elkins, curriculum director for the district, said the school is required to offer free tutoring because the elementary school has been rated by the Department of Education as a Continuous Improvement Priority School for more than two years. The designation is based on statewide test results.

Elkins said district teachers will extend daily classroom instruction in reading, writing and math, using strategies and methods from the SAD 17 curriculum.

“This additional, cohesive intervention maximizes student achievement and eliminates confusion for struggling students,” Elkins said in a statement released this week. “Instruction is tailored to individual needs.”

This is the second year Oxford Hills tutors will be working with Oxford’s students beyond the school day. Sessions are offered throughout the year and/or with a summer option. Parents must make their choices for services by Sept. 20.
