Seniors lobster meal

AUBURN — The New Auburn Senior Citizens will host a lobster shore dinner at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at St. Louis Church basement hall. Other choices are fried haddock, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and lobster rolls. The meal is for members only.

A meeting was held on Sept. 5 with President Virginia Levasseur presiding. September birthdays were noted and small gifts given. New members welcomed were Gordon Smith, Carmen Smith, Anita Denis and Noella Longtin.

The 50/50 winner was Gordon Smith; pot of gold, Lillian Giasson, Doris Biron, Julie Labrie, Kay Bernard, Gordon Smith and Julie Bannister.

Ceremony for POW-MIA Day

LISBON — The Raymond J. Lavigne VFW Post 9459 and its Auxiliary will host the Maine Vietnam Veterans Tree of Hope ceremony on Friday, Sept. 21, in recognition of National POW-MIA Recognition Day.

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., following the weekly Friday night supper which is held from 5:30 to 6:30.

Girls and adults are invited to attend to find out about the many different ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best. Blood drive at Greene Fire Dept.

GREENE — There will be a blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Greene Fire Department on the Patten Road.

Homemade soups, pizza and baked goods will be served.

Ticket raffle Sept. 23

AUBURN — A ticket raffle to benefit the John F. Murphy Navigator and Life Center programs will take place Sunday, Sept. 23, at Auburn Middle School. Doors open at noon. Drawing begins at 2 p.m. Must be present to win.

Prizes donated by area businesses include gift cards from Photo Finish, Orbit, Margarita’s,Wallingford Equipment, Twitchell’s, Gammon Landscaping, Minot Country Store, Roak the Florist, Reid’s Gun Shop, FX Marcotte, Goldworks, Meineke, Gamache & Lessard, Italian Bakery and Gregory’s.

Tickets and admissions include Portland Pirates, Splashtown, Maine Wildlife Park, Santa’s Village, Portland Sea Dogs, The Big Adventure, Oxford Plains Snow Tubing and Community Little Theater.

Merchandise includes clothing, books, hair care/beauty products, collectables, games, CDs, holiday decorations, toys, exercise equipment, scrapbooking supplies and NASCAR.

Big ticket items are two New England Patriots tickets, whitewater rafting for two, Hilton Garden in Freeport overnight package, Ramada Inn overnight package, leaf blower, $100 cash, a handmade quilt and an Odyssey golf putter. 

Tickets are purchased at the door. Ten tickets are $2.50; $5 for 20; $10 for 40; $20 for 90; and $50 for 250.

There will also be chili, chop suey, drinks and snacks as well as a 50/50 raffle.

Responding to child abuse

LEWISTON — A program on responding to child abuse will take place from 8:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 25 through Dec. 18, at Advocates for Children, 57 Birch St., Suite 204.

This is an important program for all mandated reporters and any professional working with children and families. Class participants will learn about the dynamics of abusive families, our legal system, the effects of abuse on children, child and adolescent exploitation, working with sex offenders and mandated reporting laws.

Participants will also hear perspectives from law enforcement professionals and the department of health and human services.

NARFE speaker from MOCA

LEWISTON — Chapter 1804 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Ramada Inn.

A social hour will be followed by lunch at noon.

Cheryl Willis Patten, president of Maine Old Cemetery Association, will be the speaker. Her illustrated talk will tell about the origin of MOCA and about MOCA’s mission and some of the projects it has undertaken over the years.

Her presentation will be interesting to those who have worked on or are working on family genealogies and they will realize how useful grave stone information is for compiling family histories.

Dog obedience class starts Sept. 16

LEWISTON — Great Falls Dog Obedience Club will begin another six-week dog obedience class starting Wednesday evening, Sept. 26. Dogs and puppies must be at least 3 1/2 months old and vaccinated. Juried craft show at library

LEWISTON — Neighborhood Handmade seeks Lewiston/Auburn area artisans for “Crafts in the Stacks,” a juried show on Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.
