BUCKFIELD — Selectmen approved a liquor license Tuesday night for Captain Bly’s Tavern, a restaurant and bar planned for the old town garage on Route 117.

Owner Jason Rowe said at the public hearing before the vote that the restaurant will seat about 60. He plans to serve liquor and later, when a town has an ordinance, offer live entertainment. He said he will have TVs so it will be like a sports bar with good food. The name will be Captain Bly’s Tavern.

Comments from the public were all positive. Some said it would bring business to the town.

The board was given a sample entertainment ordinance to study.

The board is getting closer to making a ruling on whether McAlister Road is a town way. Members asked Town Manager Dana Lee to take a McAlister Road resident and measure the exact distance from Route 117 to CMP pole No. 15, which is the area under discussion.

Tony Bachelder was appointed to the Board of Appeals.

Everett Tilton was reappointed to the Old Church on the Hill Committee and Mary Jones was appointed to the Beautification Committee. Eddie Burgess was appointed to the Planning Board and the Social Services Committee.

The board accepted the resignation of Tony Houghton from the Recreation Committee.

The town manager was appointed to the Freedom of Access Act.

There will be a public hearing Oct. 16 on the fire-rescue building study.

Selectmen said they found it irresponsible that public works had allowed an unsafe town truck to be driven more than 5,000 miles without an inspection sticker. Board Chairman Robin Buswell asked how this was possible because the town has only 46 miles of roads.

Lee said repairs are being made.

Lee said he was concerned about the town garage being left unlocked and recommended the town check into a swipe card system for gas and diesel usage and to improve security.
