PARIS — Selectmen unanimously voted Monday to approve a separation agreement with former Town Manager Phil Tarr.

Tarr, who has not been present at recent meetings, signed the agreement in advance. His official last day was Sept. 14.

Town Clerk Elizabeth Knox is serving as interim town manager while the board searches for Tarr’s replacement.

Selectmen have narrowed about 50 candidates down to five, Chairman Sam Elliot said Monday. They plan to interview three Friday and the other two as soon as possible. He said that after interviews are done, the board will conduct background checks and contact references. The names of applicants are confidential.

Tarr’s contract was set to expire at the beginning of January, but in recent weeks he and the board have negotiated an agreement allowing him to leave sooner. The Board of Selectmen voted immediately after the town meeting in June not to renew Tarr’s contract.
