With a Lewiston police escort, retired FBI agent Jim Caverly crests a hill on River Road after visiting the memorial site where Lewiston Police officer David Payne was shot and killed in 1988. Caverly, who retired from the Albany, N.Y., office in 1999, is on a 4,500-mile ride from Florence, Ore., to Bar Harbor to bring awareness to the Concerns Of Police Survivors. The nonprofit organization provides ongoing healing support through hands-on-programs free of charge nationwide for surviving family members and affected co-workers. Watch and listen to what Caverly and former and present Lewiston police officers have to say about “the hurtful day for all of us” at: sunjournal.com/cops092612
