PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service has agreed to extend the hours of post offices on three Maine island.
Members of Maine’s congressional delegation say the Postal Service had proposed keeping the post office on Cliff Island open only two hours a day, and keeping the post offices on Matinicus and Monhegan islands open for four hours.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree say they objected to the shorter hours and have since learned the Postal Service has reconsidered and will keep all of three of the post offices open for six hours a day.
Collins and Pingree say post offices are especially vital on islands because of the role they play in small communities.
