AUBURN — The body of an unidentified white man was found floating in Lake Auburn on Thursday morning.

Local and state police recovered the body just after noon and it has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta to determine cause of death and identification.

According to Auburn Deputy Chief Jason Moen, Auburn Water and Sewer District workers found the body floating in the water off the western shore at about 9:20 a.m. The body was found far from the water department intakes, so there are no public drinking water quality issues, he said.

According to Moen, the body had been in the water for “a while.”

Police are looking into any missing persons reports or reports of vessels that may have capsized, Moen said.

The Warden Service, State Police and the Auburn Fire Department assisted police with the recovery effort. According to Moen, the body was brought to the Lake Auburn Boat Launch on Route 4 for transport to the ME’s Office.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
