LEWISTON — With the most successful regular season in a decade coming to a close, Lewiston High School’s field hockey team proved Monday there was room for at least one more memorable moment.

Kelsey Dumond netted the first three of her four goals in succession in the first half and Ravon Palmer stopped seven shots to earn her seventh shutout of the season as the Blue Devils ran over Edward Little 5-0 in the team’s KVAC season finale Monday.

“One of my goals, in terms of coaching, is to see them all play their individual best game at the same time in one game,” Lewiston coach Randy Richardson said. “I was afraid that maybe that wasn’t going to happen for us this year, but the first half of this game came really close.”

The win in the finale was well-timed for Lewiston (9-5-0), which lost its previous two outings with a shorthanded roster.

“It’s a group of relationships that they have,” Richardson said. “They develop them throughout their years at Lewiston High School … When any of them are absent, they’re all affected. When they come back to play with us, it gives us all a big boost.”

In a game earlier this season, Lewiston played strong against the Red Eddies (2-11-1), but nearly settled for a tie before scoring late for a 1-0 victory.

“It was nice to come out and just power through the first half,” Dumond said. “I think it gave us a lot of encouragement.”

There was little doubt which team was going to control the tempo Monday. The Devils spent most of the first half entrenched in the Edward Little end, and rattled off four goals on 21 total shots.

“They’re good, they’re skilled, and I hope they do well in the playoffs,” EL coach Greg Perkins said. “They need it. They should be competitive and have a chance to make it out of the first round.”

Dumond got things rolling for Lewiston 7:22 into the first half, capping an odd-man rush with a drive through EL keeper Amanda Williams’ legs. She struck again less than a minute later on a penalty corner feed from Natalie Rousseau.

“For Kelsey to go out and score those goals right off the bat, it set the tone for everyone else,” Palmer said. “It made everyone else want to go out there and do the same thing.”

She completed her natural hat trick at the 13:03 mark of the first half on a hard shot from in close after beating three defenders, and then set up Jenessa Talarico for the fourth Lewiston tally with 7:24 to play in the first with a cross from the right side after a great kick save by Williams.

Richardson’s halftime message was clear: Don’t allow any goal, and add to the lead.

The Blue Devils listened. Just 1:15 into the second half, Dumond’s fourth goal — a backhand flick from the left side of the cage — put the Eddies deeper in a hole out of which they could not climb.

“Ravon’s had a ton of shutouts this season, and we wanted to finish it out, on our last game, our senior game, with another shutout.”

But to EL’s credit, Lewiston did not score again, either.

“I told the team at halftime, I said, ‘You can just sit back and lose 10-0, or you can go out there and play together as a team.’ I was much more pleased in the second half. We went out there and gave them a battle.”

The Blue Devils’ nine wins assures them of a playoff berth, and when the final results are tabulated they will likely finish in fifth position and travel to Mt. Ararat to face the Eagles in the Eastern Class A quarterfinals. The Eagles and Devils split their season series, with Lewiston taking a 2-0 decision early on, and Mt. Ararat winning 4-0 a week ago.

“Coming off of a couple of hard losses, we needed this, especially before playoffs,” Dumond said.

Prior to the game, as part of the Blue Devils’ senior-day festivities, the field hockey boosters presented Lewiston AD Jason Fuller with a check for $750 toward the school’s field rennovation project.
