LEWISTON — Two men were detained and police blocked off a section of Pine Street briefly after gunshots were heard downtown early Thursday night.
At about 5 p.m., police responded to the area of Ash and Jefferson streets when at least one caller reported hearing a gunshot. A witness described seeing a man and a woman inside a Jeep, but others reported seeing a potential suspect running on foot between Ash and Pine streets.
Police stopped a pair of men on Pine Street and questioned them about the shooting. The men were taken to the police station for further questioning.
No one had been charged in connection with the shooting by late Thursday night.
Police said it did not appear that anyone was hit by gunfire. No spent casings or other evidence was found, but the matter remained under investigation.
“We don’t have any doubt that it happened,” police Lt. David St. Pierre said.
It was the second time gunshots were reported within a week. Last Friday, several shots were fired at River Valley Village on the other side of town. No one was hurt in that incident. A Brooklyn man was arrested.
