The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference cross country championships included one of the closest finishes ever in the boys’ race.
The race for the team title wasn’t nearly as close.
Lewiston placed four runners in the top seven to finish with 47 points and cruised to a 35-point victory in the conference meet, held at Cony High School.
Mt. Blue finished second with 82 points. Bangor (88), Mt. Ararat (110) and Hampden Academy (120) rounded out the top five. Edward Little finished eighth and Oxford Hills 13th.
In a thrilling finish, Mt. Blue’s Justin Tracy edged Lewiston’s Mohamed Barre by 3/10 of a second to win the race in 17:14.1. Mt. Ararat’s Sam Wood was third.
Lewiston took three of the next four spots with Mohamed Awil, Isaiah Harris and Mohamed Mohamed finishing fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Josh Horne of Mt. Blue finished fifth.
Mt. Ararat won the girls’ title with 57 points, followed by Brunswick (61), Hampden Academy (68), Mt. Blue (109) and Bangor (141). Lewiston finished seventh.
Erzsebet Nagy of Lawrence won the individual title easily in 19:27, 1:26 ahead of runner-up Tessa Cassidy of Brunswick. Lewiston’s Faith Shaw was the top local runner, placing 10th, one spot ahead of Mt. Blue’s Katherine Gunther.
Camden Hills won the Class B girls’ championship with 31 points, 24 less than runner-up Waterville. Leavitt finished sixth. Bethanie Brown of Waterville earned individual honors with a time of 18:59, 1:07 ahead of runner-up Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills. Leavitt’s Maddie Wiegman was the top local finisher, placing ninth.
Maranacook took the boys’ title with 57 points, followed by Winslow (89) and Lincoln Academy (90). Leavitt finished fifth.
Ben Trapani of Camden Hills (17:09.8) edged Gardiner’s Christian Heath by half a second to win the boys’ individual crown. Harrison Knowlton of Leavitt finished sixth while teammate Tim Enos finished ninth.
