AUBURN — Members of the public will get a chance next week to voice their concerns about safety on Route 4, discuss solutions and learn what officials are working on when it comes to the stretch of road from Auburn to Turner.

The public meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Auburn Hall. Representatives from Auburn, the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center and the Maine Department of Transportation will talk about Route 4 and hear from the public.

Residents have long complained that the 55-mph, four-lane stretch of Route 4 from outer Center Street to the Turner town line is dangerous, especially for traffic turning left. Experts say that danger exists in large part because turning drivers must stop in the left lane, which is also the road’s passing lane. Drivers risk getting rear-ended as they sit waiting for southbound traffic to clear so they can turn.

The Maine DOT recently installed a yellow sign with flashing lights to warn drivers of turning traffic. Officials have called that a short-term solution and say they will consider more permanent fixes for the road.
