AUBURN — Oxford Hills and Edward Little not only had to square off against each other in a football game Friday night, the teams also had to contend with another opponent — Mother Nature.

Torrential rains and strong winds made Walton Field a quagmire.

But with the score tied 6-6 with 3:55 remaining, Edward Little head coach Dave Sterling had quarterback Sean Ford run off to the right hash mark on the Oxford Hills 11-yard line for one reason — to let Cameron Cormier kick the ball.

Cormier rewarded EL’s faithful with a 26-yard field goal, giving the Red Eddies a 9-6 victory over Oxford Hills.

“That was our plan,” said a wet Sterling. “Cam has a great leg and almost hit the extra point earlier. We let him kick it.”

“I knew I could hit it,” said Cormier. “Big win for this team going into Lewiston next week.”

Offense was hard to come by on both sides of the field. The Eddies got their only touchdown with 6:51 left in the first quarter when Johnny Boyd plunged in from a yard out to give the Eddies a 6-0 lead.

Oxford Hills’ offense was stalled by its inability to hold on to the football. The Vikings fumbled 12 times, losing six of them. The last fumble set the Eddies up at the Vikings 14-yard line late in the fourth quarter and putting them in range for the kick.

“Both sides had to deal with weather tonight,” said Oxford Hills head coach Mark Soehren. “They dealt with it better than we did.”

The Vikings only touchdown came in the secondquarter when Godin connected with Nick Bowie on a 27-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass, tying the game at 6. Malik Geiger led the Vikings’ rushing attack with 64 yards, while Bowie chipped in 14 yards and a touchdown reception. Johnny Boyd had 38 yards rushing along with his touchdown to pace the Eddies.

Oxford Hills falls to 3-5 on the season and will host Cony to next week, while EL improves to 2-6 as the Red Eddies prepare for the 100edition of the “Battle of the Bridge” with rival Lewiston to end their season.
