Rick White has resigned as boys’ basketball coach at Mountain Valley High School to pursue other opportunities, he said Tuesday.

White submitted his resignation over the weekend and met with his seniors Monday to tell them of his decision, which came several weeks after another job opening became known to him.

“I’m still in the process so it’s really tough to say anything,” White said. “It’s for personal reasons, professional and personal reasons. I have things in the fire that I’m looking at.”

White declined to elaborate further on what his future plans are only to say he is not pursuing another varsity coaching job.

In three seasons as head coach, White compiled a 46-12 record. Mountain Valley’s best season was his first, when the Falcons went 19-1. They were undefeated in the Mountain Valley Conference, won the conference championship and ultimately lost in the Western B semifinals to eventual state champion Falmouth.

The Falcons followed that season with a 16-3 campaign and a trip to the regional quarterfinals in 2011. Last year, they finished 11-8, losing to Poland in the Western Class B preliminaries.

Mountain Valley athletic director Al Cayer hopes to have the vacancy filled soon. The first day of practice is Nov. 11. The regular season starts Dec. 10.

“We posted it in-house today and we have to give the mandatory 10 days (for inhouse candidates to apply),” Cayer said. “If no application is handed in to me, we’ll post it outside (the district). I hope to have interviews by Nov. 5th.”

Cayer said White remains head coach of the boys’ lacrosse team and an assistant on the football team, which plays at York in the Western B quarterfinals on Friday night.
