RUMFORD — People taking a hike through the Maine woods on Saturday to enjoy near 70-degree warmth, should don fluorescent orange apparel.

The regular firearms season for white-tailed deer starts Saturday for Maine residents, and Monday for nonresidents. The season ends Nov. 24, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

A total of 34,160 any-deer (doe) permits have been issued for 2012 in 13 of the state’s 29 Wildlife Management Districts, compared to 26,390 any-deer permits issued in 2011, Doug Rafferty, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesman, said Friday in a news release.

Hunters can take one antlered deer annually in Maine, although hunters with an any-deer permit are allowed to take either one antlered deer or one antlerless deer, he said.

Hunters are also reminded that Hunters for the Hungry can take their harvest and provide it to food kitchens, shelters and other charitable organizations statewide, Rafferty said. To do so, call 1-888-4DEERME (433-3763).
