MECHANIC FALLS — Voters going to the polls Nov. 6 will decide whether to ratify the consumer fireworks ordinance adopted by the Town Council in September.

A year ago, when it appeared fireworks were going to become legal by state law, the council adopted a wait-and-see attitude on whether the town should adopt more restrictive regulations than the state. It didn’t have long to wait.

Calls started coming in by mid-June, particularly from residents of the more built-up parts of town, with complaints of nightly, noisy celebrations.

More than 60 residents turned out for a public hearing, called by the council in August, with the majority voicing support for setting some restrictions on when and where fireworks could be used.

The ordinance allows people to set off fireworks on Friday and Saturday evenings, year-round, from sunset to 10 p.m. Hours are extended on July 3, 4 and 5, and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for New Year’s celebrations.

To lessen the danger posed by fireworks in built-up portions of town, the ordinance stipulates that fireworks cannot be discharged within 150 feet of any combustible structure.

Copies of the full ordinance are available at the Municipal Building on Lewiston Street, as well as on the town’s website.
