HARTFORD — Selectmen discussed the upcoming special town meeting Thursday and closing the transfer station.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has demanded the town close its transfer station.
Selectmen discussed having one warrant article to authorize the closing of the transfer station, one to authorize another bulky waste pickup system for the town, and one to seek authority to sell the old transfer station property. Hartford has curbside pickup for garbage.
The special town meeting is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Town Hall.
A third item that may be included on the warrant is a proposal to provide public Wi-Fi Internet access at the Town Office.
The final warrant for the meeting has not been approved.
Ownership of the old school reverted to the town under terms stipulated in 1959 when the town deeded it to the Hartford Historical and Improvement Society. The school was given to the society on condition that ownership would revert to the town if it was no longer used for its intended purpose. A warrant article would authorize funds to be spent for insurance, operation and maintenance of the building.
Town Clerk Lianne Bedard brought up the request by a resident to name his private road Copperhead Lane. After discussing the fact that there were no copperhead snakes anywhere near Hartford, Chairman Lee Holman and Selectman Zoe Cowett approved the name.
Holman announced a benefit supper for resident Clifford Bragg Jr. on Nov. 10 in the Town Hall. More information can be obtained from the town office at 388-2674.
The animal control officer found a male beagle in the Nota Drive area of Hartford. While they hope the owner will claim the dog, selectmen approved having a veterinarian check him so they can decide whether to put him up for adoption or to euthanize him. The ACO said the dog is a very pleasant companion.
Selectmen approved two donations to individuals from the Laura Fogg Irish fund. The fund was left by Irish to benefit Hartford residents. The trustees recommended a $500 donation to one resident for medical expenses and $500 to another for car repairs.
Selectmen have scheduled a tabletop exercise for Nov. 29 to give the board experience in responding to a simulated emergency and test the town’s emergency plans. The exercise is funded through a Department of Homeland Security grant.
