OXFORD — A special town meeting to vote on an ordinance dealing with pawnbrokers and a measure to allow a sewage treatment plant on Route 26 is set tentatively for Dec. 12.

At Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Michael Chammings said while some proposed ordinances can wait until the 2013 town meeting, the sewage plant expansion and the need to stop stolen items from being sold without tracking are more urgent.

The proposed pawnbrokers, precious metal dealers and secondhand dealers ordinance is meant to stop criminals from easily selling stolen items and to stop pawnbrokers from reselling stolen items.

The other item would allow a sewage treatment plant in the town’s mixed use zone, the commercial area along Route 26. The town commissioned a report on sewage treatment options from engineering firm Woodard and Curran and the town is steering toward a project expected to cost more than $20 million. Chammings said the town’s Tax Increment Financing district money would pay for much of the plant.

Chammings has said the sewage lines on Route 26 would make the commercial district more attractive to businesses that may want to move to the area.

The Planning Board is set to hold a public hearing on the plans on Nov. 20.
