OXFORD — Selectmen voted to appoint six members to the Recreation Committee on Thursday, after deciding in July to hold off until they could rewrite the committee’s bylaws.
That decision came in the midst of accusations that committee member Gary Smith, who was up for reappointment, had insulted children during an argument with coach Randy Mills at a June 20 Oxford White Sox baseball game.
Smith stepped down shortly after, and the board recently approved rewritten bylaws, cutting the maximum number of committee members from 12 to 11. The board appointed six members from among nine applicants Thursday.
They were Chairwoman Pamela Lovely, who was reappointed, Ryan Kane, Laurence Sanborn, Phil Richardson, Norman Turgeon and Meggan McPhail. They join Tracy Cox, Ashley Colby-Herrick and Lois Pike.
The applications of David Olson, Larry Edwards and former Oxford Baseball/Softball Association President Joseph Rideout were not addressed.
On Friday, Town Manager Michael Chammings said he didn’t know why the board didn’t fill the remaining two posotions.
The committee’s activities include youth sports, the annual duck race, the Recreation Center and the ice rick.
