OXFORD – A local Boy Scout has constructed a handicap ramp at the Anderson-Staples American Legion Post 112 on King Street as his Eagle Scout project.
Ben Dill, a 17-year-old senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School and a senior patrol leader of Troop 196 in Oxford, constructed the ramp with the help of friends and troop members over three days.
“I wanted to do this for the Legion. They’ve always been there for us and I wanted to give them something back,” he said. The Legion charters Troop 196. The Legion building is also used by many groups, including Bingo players.
The old failed to meet code, Dill said.
Dill, who is a lifeguard in the summer, is involved in the Big Brother/Big Sister program, plays lacrosse and plans to attend welding school after graduation in June. He has been in the scouting program since the age of 7.
The Eagle Scout is the highest rank a scout can attain in the Boy Scouts of America. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life and, in part, requires earning at least 21 merit badges and the service project.
Dill said he has submitted the paperwork and should hear back by Nov. 18 whether he has attained the rank.
