First Aid, CPR offered

OXFORD — An American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and First Aid Class will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Oxford Public Safety Building.

On completion of the one-day class participants will receive a certificate that is good for two years. This course is accepted for day/child care providers, loggers and other non-healthcare related professions.

Future scheduled classes will be Jan. 12, Feb. 9 and March 9. There will be no December class. Groups may also request to schedule a class at their convenience.

Healthcare BLS CPR recertifications are done as needed.

Honey Bee Club to meet Nov. 17

PARIS — The Honey Bee Club will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Oxford county Extension, 9 Olson Road.

The meeting will be open for questions and answers. Voting for new committee officers and deciding on a Christmas party will take place.

All meetings are held the third Saturday of every month.

St. Catherine fair, raffle

NORWAY — The annual Holiday Fair and Raffle at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church will be held at the church on Saturday, Nov. 17. Doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 1:30 p.m. The church is at 32 Paris St., between Beal and Winter streets.

In addition to a great variety of gift and food items available for purchase from local crafters, the fair features a bake sale, a “trash and treasure” room and a “pick your prize” raffle. This year the raffle includes two $100 cash prizes as well as other seasonal items.

Ample parking is available at the back of the church and in an adjacent parking lot. Both are entered from Beal Street.

Library launches reading program

PARIS — The Paris Public Library is launching a reading program for children in grades K-8, using Sylvan Learning’s online program, BookAdventure.net. Students will be able to take online quizzes after reading a book to earn points which may then be “redeemed” on prizes.

Stop by the Paris Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 17, anytime between noon and 3 p.m. for an orientation to BookAdventure and to register for the program. Registration forms and information packets will be available at the library’s circulation desk, too. Participants must register first so they may receive their individual user name and password to access the quizzes.

Music Sunday at First U

PARIS — Show tunes, folk songs and many more will be part of Music For a Sunday Afternoon taking place at the First Universalist Church on Pine Street at 2 p.m. on Nov. 18.

Musicians who will be performing are Donna Hurd, Renee Wales, Adrianna Twitchell, Karleigh Twitchell, Terry Twitchell, Jeanne and Berdina Whittemore, The Rev. Anita White, Christopher White and Alan deSilva.

Special recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Moller pipe organ will be a history of the organ prepared and spoken by Merton Lord. There will be a sing-along with the audience and the grand finale will be a paen to the capabilities of the organ with Hurd playing the No. 60 Toccata by Flor Peeters.

Refreshments will follow the concert. There is no charge for the concert, but donations will be accepted at the door.

Balsam sale aids Safe Voices

LEWISTON — Maine-made balsam fir decorations make great gifts and help support Safe Voices, the domestic violence resource center serving Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties.

Available are a traditional, handmade, double sided wreath accented with pine cone clusters with burgundy berry centers and a holiday burgundy velvet bow; a wreath with natural cones and a purple velvet bow (purple is the color for domestic violence awareness); or a kissing ball adorned with burgundy bows.

West Paris Historical meeting

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. A potluck supper and business meeting will be followed by guest speaker Dale Paiirainen speaking on Finnish heritage.

The October meeting was held at Frank and Mary Perham’s. Frank showed and talked about his mineral display.

Milt Inman won the black powder rifle at the hunters breakfast.

Register for college classes

PARIS — Registration for the University of Maine System spring 2013 semester starts in November at University College at South Paris. Registration dates vary by campus, with most open registration beginning in mid-month. Spring semester classes begin in January.

University College at South Paris will offer courses taught on-site at the center as well as courses delivered via interactive television and videoconference. Students also can choose from hundreds of online campus courses. Students may earn university degrees online and on-site at the center.

Nikki Abbott, director of University College at South Paris, said, “Required courses tend to fill quickly.”

New students are encouraged to meet with an adviser before registering for classes.

Master gardener course offered

PARIS — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is once again offering the very popular Master Gardener Volunteer training in 2013. For the first time the course is being offered in two locations: Thursday evenings at the South Paris Extension office and Wednesday afternoons at Region 9 Technical School in Mexico.

“The Master Gardener course is a fun way for gardeners to learn the science of gardening and then use that knowledge to grow and donate food to the community,” said Barbara Murphy, Extension Educator and coordinator of the training. “In 2011, over 17,900 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables were grown and donated from Oxford County.” 

The training will focus on fruit and vegetable production, composting, season extension as well as botany, soil science and pest management. Class size is limited. Thanksgiving story time

PARIS — The Children’s Room of the Paris Public Library will host a Thanksgiving Story-time for all ages on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The story time will feature stories and crafts celebrating this unique American holiday, highlighting the traditions and legends of the early English settlers in Plymouth.
