AUGUSTA — Larry A. Gordon, 75, of Augusta and formerly of Strong, passed over peacefully early Monday, Nov. 10, at Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta, with family at his side.

He was born in Madison, Feb. 14, 1937, a second generation son of John and Annie Gordon and received his education in Strong area schools, prior to entering the Marine Corps in 1954, where he served until 1957.

In 1960, he married Lorayne (Dunham) Gordon. They spent 45 wonderful years together raising their children, David and Dori and creating many unforgettable memories with friends and family. Along with their home often being a place for outings, they also took on many hobbies. They began riding snowmobiles, then went to riding motorcycles, camping, fishing and canoeing, jeeping, to their final passion, fishing on Mooselookmeguntic Lake and spending time in their camper surrounded by friends. Regardless of what you saw Larry do, with the exception of hunting and his occasional poker game, Lorayne was always at his side. He lost the love of his life in 2005.

Upon completion of his service in the armed forces, Larry went to work for his brother-in-law, Charlie Huff, in the wood harvesting business, where he worked closely with his nephew, Harry Gordon. Harry and Larry went out on their own in the business, but Larry eventually reverted back to owning his own skidder and cutting wood for Harry.

His son, David, followed in his footsteps, working by his side, until Larry was forced into retirement in 1988, due to an illness. Despite his illness, you could not hold Larry down, always needing to keep busy. He is known by most locals as the helper at Beal’s General Store, where he spent many hours a day until he was forced to leave his home in January 2010.

Larry is survived by his son, David Gordon and fiancee, Nancy, of Farmington; daughter, Dori Reed and husband, Kerry, of Strong; his grandchildren, Sabrina Ellis and husband, Brian, of Strong, Erica Rollins and husband, Cody, of New Vineyard and Jessica and Amy Reed, both of Strong; two great-grandchildren, Mya Gellman and Novalyn Ellis; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with his parents and wife, Larry was predeceased by his brothers, Lawrence and his wife, Mahla and John “Sonny” Gordon; his sisters, Ethel Hannington and husband, Albert, Helena Huff and husband, Roy, Vionna Pinkham and husband, Leslie, Beaulah Spaulding and husband, Herbert and Emma “Noogie” Walker and husband, Milton; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry was considered by many as one of the “Good Ole Boys.” He upheld this during his stay at the Woodlands in Waterville and then Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta. Many thanks go out to the special staff members who helped Larry continue to obtain his natural ‘witty’ personality.
