ORONO — The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team jumped out to an early two-goal lead and then failed to hold on to that cushion when Massachusetts scored the tying goal with 1:08 remaining in the third period as 4,231 fans watched at Alfond Arena Friday night.
The game went to overtime, but after five minutes, it ended in a 2-2 tie.
“The thing I stressed to our guys was that you can’t play the scoreboard,” Massachusetts head coach John Micheletto said. “Up a goal or down a goal, we’re good when we play like we’re capable of.”
Maine moves to 2-9-1 overall (1-5-1 in Hockey East) with the tie. Massachusetts is now 3-4-1 overall (2-4-1 in Hockey East).
“It feels like a loss when you have the lead and the other team ties it like that,” Maine head coach Tim Whitehead said. “It was a hard fought game that could have gone either way, but unfortunately we just got one point out of it.”
Junior goaltender Martin Ouellette stopped 30 shots for the Black Bears. His record moves to 1-3-1 on the season. Sophomore net minder Kevin Boyle turned away 27 shots for the Minutemen.
“Ouellette was a huge difference maker for them early,” Micheletto said. “We had a lot of opportunities. I’m happy for Marty; he’s a great kid.”
Maine broke into the goal column first at the 7:39 mark of the first period as the Black Bears tallied on a set faceoff play to take a 1-0 lead over the Minutemen.
Devin Shore won the faceoff and pushed the puck back to Mark Nemec just above the left face off the circle. Nemec gathered the puck and stepped toward the slot where he fired a heavy slap shot past Minutemen goalie Kevin Boyle’s glove.
Shore earned the assist on the goal.
The Black Bears didn’t wait long to extend their lead as Jake Rutt scored a power-play goal less than two minutes later at the 9:21 point of the first period to extend Maine’s lead to 2-0.
Ben Hutton and Kyle Beattie chipped in assists on the goal.
Rutt picked the puck up near the hash-mark along the right boards and cycled high around the top of the circle into the slot where he fired a quick wrist shot into traffic and over the right shoulder of Boyle.
