PORTLAND — Foxcroft’s offense, the equivalent of a sports car through most of the Class C football season, was relatively pedestrian Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

No problem. You can walk into the end zone, after all.

Donnie Boyer pounded out three touchdowns and Louis LaFache recovered a pair of Winslow fumbles, enough to secure the Ponies’ 22-20 victory and their first state championship since 2007.

Boyer rushed 26 times for 105 yards, including a pair of 1-yard touchdowns in the second quarter and a 3-yard score for Foxcroft (11-1) on the opening series of the third.

“This is the most special feeling I could imagine other than getting married and having my son,” said Foxcroft coach Danny White, who lost in two previous title-game appearances as a player and as a coach.

Making its first championship appearance since Class B in 2006, Winslow (10-2) didn’t disappear quietly after the third Boyer TD made it 22-7.

Justin Martin’s fumble recovery at the Foxcroft 16 set up Zach Guptill (22 carries, 100 yards) for an 8-yard TD with 3:46 remaining in the third. Dylan Hapworth hooked the point-after wide, keeping it at a two-possession game.

Winslow drove 71 yards to another score, a 3-yard pass from Bobby Chenard to Owen Dutil, with 2:39 left.

Hapworth’s ensuing onside kick skipped perilously along the turf before Ryan Rebar covered it for Foxcroft. It was the last of many timely grabs by Rebar, who caught seven passes from Hunter Law for 107 yards.

Boyer then ripped off consecutive runs of 4, 7, 5, 8 and 7 yards to ice it for the Ponies, who were making their seventh appearance in the past 11 finals.

“The community is as much as part of this as the team,” senior lineman Alex Sedore said. “Coach has been talking all week about how there would be no better feeling in the world, and we wanted to go out and get it for him and for us.”

Bizarre blunders led to an exchange of touchdowns in the final 2:15 of the first half, the latter falling Foxcroft’s way.

Foxcroft punter Corey Bjornson-Weismore collected a clean snap but second-guessed and tucked and ran in the wake of Winslow’s impending rush. Joe Hopkins dropped him at the Foxcroft 34.

Winslow needed eight plays to knot the game at 7. Guptill capped the drive with a 3-yard plunge. Hapworth booted the extra point.

The Black Raiders went into kneel-down formation after taking over at their own 10 with 29 seconds remaining.

Chenard backed away from his center before the exchange was complete, and the ball ended up on the ground. LaFache locked onto the loose ball for the Ponies.

Following an incomplete pass, Law spun inside the 1-yard line on a keeper to set up Boyer’s second touchdown of the half.

After Winslow jumped offside, moving the ball half the distance to the goal line, Foxcroft turned to Boyer for the two-point rush and a 15-7 halftime advantage.

Foxcroft scored more than 500 points on its way to the Little Ten Conference title. The Ponies were held to 224 yards Saturday.
