BRIDGTON — Honor Flight New England chairman Joe Byron met with World War II veteran Edmund Barker and Honor Flight Maine chairwoman Lisa Villa at the Lake Region T.V. studio in Bridgton to discuss and promote the Honor Flight Maine program.

Joe Byron said, “We are thrilled to have the Ladies Auxiliary St. Johns Post in Maine take on this challenge. I am grateful for the help in getting the word out about us and trying to get donations.”

Honor Flight New England is a nonprofit which recognizes American veterans for their sacrifices and achievement by flying them to Washington, D.C. to view their war memorial at no cost to the veteran. Top priority is given to WWII veterans who are dying at a rate of 1,000 per day, and terminally ill veterans from all wars.

Said Villa, “Honor Flight Maine is our attempt to locate and identify Maine’s WW II veterans and to raise funds to send them.”

The program guest, Edmund Barker, 90 years old, served as a Combat Infantryman and had four beach head landings in the Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, Solomon Islands and New Guinea. The program was taped by LRTV and will be shown on community cable channels throughout the state.
