NORWAY — A pet dog died in a house fire on Gore Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters from more than half a dozen towns responded to the call at 1058 Gore Road shortly before 3 p.m. The home is owned by Tom Farrington and Allison Henderson.

Only the 7-year-old boxer named Lexie was inside the mobile home at the time. A motorist passing by alerted a neighbor who called for help.

Norway Fire Chief Dennis Yates said firefighters couldn’t reach the dog in time to save her.

“They got in there, they just weren’t fast enough,” he said.

He said he asked PACE ambulance personnel to try to administer oxygen to the dog after one of the firefighters thought she might be still breathing.

The dog was found in the front of the trailer as far away from the fire as she could get, he said.

Henderson, who arrived on the scene about 20 minutes later, cried in anguish when told by Yates that her dog had passed away.

Yates said the fire appeared to have started around a wood stove that had been burning all day.

Firefighters kept the flames to an addition near the rear of the mobile home but there was smoke damage throughout it.

Henderson said she and Farrington had recently moved into the mobile home on his property and were renovating it.

Firefighters from Norway, Oxford, Paris and Poland responded, along with tankers from West Paris, Waterford, Harrison and Otisfield to ensure there was enough water on scene. The tankers are used when there is no available water on scene. They were filled from a brook on Route 117.

“The guys did a wonderful job,” Yates said.

The chief said the home is uninhabitable and the Red Cross has been called to help the couple.
