POLAND — The fate of the $2.3 million project to upgrade and expand the town’s fire/rescue station rests on the turnout and vote at a special town meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Town Hall. At
The project, approved at last April’s annual town meeting, was halted when Code Enforcement Officer Nick Adams examined actual construction plans prior to issuing a building permit and discovered that the expansion would encroach on a resource protection zone.
The fire/rescue station is next to Waterhouse Brook and near the 250-foot resource protection zone for Lower Range Pond.
Adams’ discovery caught town officials off guard; they had believed a zoning amendment approved at the April 2011 town meeting had solved the problem.
Voters at Thursday’s meeting will be asked to amend the town’s comprehensive land-use code and the zoning map, changing the affected portion to a Limited Commercial Zone that would permit the expansion of the fire station.
Interim Town Manager Rosemary Roy stressed the importance of a solid turnout for the town meeting, if construction of the addition is to begin this year.
“According to our town charter, we have to have at least 100 registered voters present in order to hold a valid town meeting,” Roy said.
