BOSTON — Justin Edwards scored a career-high 29 points to lead the University of Maine men’s basketball team to a 76-73 win over Northeastern at Matthews Arena on Wednesday. Maine is now 2-4 on the season while Northeastern falls to 4-3.
The Black Bears and Huskies played a back-and-forth first half, but the Huskies took a 28-26 lead before Zarko Valjarevic sank a deep three to give Maine a one-point edge.
After a Husky bucket, Kilian Cato made a tough layup while getting fouled to give Maine a 31-30 lead with 4:22 left in the first half.
Northeastern made a late run to take a 40-35 lead at halftime.
Edwards and Alasdair Fraser each had 11 points to lead Maine in the first half while Xavier Pollard had five assists.
Wentworth 59, UNE 47
BIDDEFORD — Senior Corey Therriault of Auburn scored a team-high 12 points while classmate Colin Johnson added 11 as the Wentworth held off a late University of New England rally with a 59-47 win in the Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s basketball opener for both teams.
UNE junior Charles Fenner III buried a three to make it a 50-19 game before freshman Cam Sennick gave the Black & Gold a 52-19 lead with 13:40 left.
Girls’ hockey
Leavitt/EL 6, Winslow 1
AUBURN — Taylor Landry scored three goals and seven other players had at least a point as Leavitt/EL defeated Winslow 6-1 in girls’ hockey action Wednesday.
Amanda Williams, Danica Nadeau and Emma Martineau also scored for the Red Hornets, while Martineau and Abby Roy collected two assists each in the victory. Tori Sanford stopped five of the six shots she faced to record her second win of the season for Leavitt/EL (2-0).
Winslow’s goal came off the stick of Jennifer Poulin, and keeper Jessica Cain stopped 34 of 40 shots in the losing effort.
