WATERVILLE — Three Colby College first-year players — Ryan Jann, Patrick Stewart, and Luke Westman — combined for 35 points to lead the Mules to a 70-63 win over Fisher College on the first day of the Colby Men’s Basketball Classic at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Friday night.

After Colby took a 33-23 halftime lead, the game tightened up in the second half. Sam Nwadike had 14 of his game-high 16 points in the final 20 minutes for the Falcons. He had eight straight points — including a 3-point shot with 4:28 to play to tie the game at 55-55.

Thomas 104, Green Mountain 97

POULTNEY, Vt. — Green Mountain College played catch up throughout its game against Thomas College in Friday night’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) basketball action. 

Although the Eagles eventually tied the game at 87-87, Despite a valiant effort by the Eagles to tie the game 87-87 and force overtime, the Terriers came away with a 104-97 win thanks to a 17-10 push in the extra period.

Thomas (3-0 overall, 1-0 NAC) quickly gained a first half lead in a fast-paced opening stanza which was led by Levi Barnes who tallied 13 points in the first half.  Teammates Franklin Salvador and Stanley Green Jr. posted 10 points each, respectively.

Women’s basketball

Castleton State 67, UMF 55

CASTLETON, Vt. — UMaine-Farmington women’s basketball spotted Castleton State College an 18-point lead before getting on the scoreboard and a second-half comeback came up short as the Beavers dropped a 67-55 decision to the Spartans in a North Atlantic Conference opener on at Glenbrook Gym on Friday night.

Senior Kenni Norton of Strong led the Beavers with 15 points, including a 3-pointer at the 13:54 mark of the first half for UMF’s first points of the game.

Junior Holly Oliver netted 12 points and a team-high four rebounds.

Norton and freshman Ayla Allen of Rumford each dished out three assists.

Thomas 79, Green Mountain 75

POULTNEY Vt. — Despite a late comeback by the Greeen Mountain, Thomas College was able to stay poised, earning a 79-75 victory along with its first NAC women’s basketball win on Friday.

Thomas displayed a fine effort on the defensive end while applying pressure in the backcourt as well, causing the Eagles to commit a total of 18 turnovers in the first half. Megan Pelletier had three steals followed by Emilee Reynolds with two, and Jasmine Bishop with one. 

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 3, Colby 1

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team defeated Colby, 3-1, in their 199th meeting at Watson Arena on Friday.

For contributing two goals to the team’s three-goal performance, Bowdoin’s Rob Toczylowski received the Peter Schuh Memorial Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the game.

Babson 4, USM 2

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Junior Connor Berto scored a pair of goals Friday evening to lead the Babson Beavers to a 4-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in ECAC Men’s East hockey action at the Babson Skating Center.

Berto snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the second period with his second goal of the game, and team-leading sixth of the season. Berto took a pass from senior PT Donato and beat USM freshman goalie Josh Hillegas over the shoulder at 10:21.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin 7, Colby 0

WATERVILLE — Kayla Lessard stopped 28 shots for the shutout and Schuyler Nardell had four goals to lead the Bowdoin women’s hockey team to a 7-0 win over Colby at Alfond Rink on Friday.

Lessard stopped 14 shots in the second period in playing for the first time this season.

USM 5, Nichols 1

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Freshman Cassandra Sherman scored two goals, including the game-winning goal, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies past the Nichols College Bison, 5-1, in ECAC Women’s East play Friday evening at Levy Rink.

Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening period when sophomore Julia Pearl netted her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Kailey Bubier of Auburn at 5:11.
