Biddeford’s Katherine Dumoulin spent her two minutes in solitude during Saturday’s game with St. Dom’s resting her weary legs and praying for redemption. Given that opportunity, she crashed the net and gave the Tigers an overtime win over the undermanned and resilient Saints.
Dumoulin rebounded Darcie Fisher’s shot and tapped it past St. Dom’s freshman goalie Taylor Fillebrown at 4:19 of the extra period for the 4-3 win. It was the freshman right wing’s second goal of the game.
“It felt so good,” Dumoulin said. “I was really worried for my team because I didn’t want to be the reason that we lost and so I was praying the whole time in the penalty box. Getting that goal off a rebound of a good shot, it just felt like a big release.”
Dumoulin was sent to the box 1:47 into overtime, but the Tigers (2-1) killed off the fifth of five St. Dom’s power plays to extend the game against the already over-extended Saints (0-2), who had just eight skaters available and rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
“We had our opportunities,” St. Dom’s coach Paul Gosselin said. “I thought we were going to walk away with it at the end. It’s one of those tough games, win or lose.”
It’s been a tough start to the season for the Saints, who lost coach Don Boucher to cancer a week ago last Wednesday. Senior forward Kelley McLellan had to sit out Saturday with a knee problem.
“It’s been a long week for us,” Gosselin said. “The turnaround from the last game we had (a 9-6 loss to Yarmouth on Monday), our goal was to keep the goals down, and we did that.”
Freshman goalie Taylor Fillebrown stopped 28 shots in net for the Saints.
“A lot of their goals were on deflections or rebounds,” Gosselin said. “Our goalie played very well today.”
Kayla McLellan, wearing her sister’s No. 17, scored twice in the third period to erase a 3-1 deficit. The second came with both teams a player down with two minutes remaining.
“Kayla made a nice move,” Gosselin said. “She cut to the inside, broke the ‘D’ and picked off the top corner.”
“We were pretty upset when they ended up coming back because we had so many more skaters,” Dumoulin said. “It just made us all the more determined to win.”
The frustration started early for the Tigers, who outshot the Saints, 13-8 in the first period but only had a 1-1 tie to show for it after Tia Rotolico’s wrister tipped off the glove of Biddeford goalie Cassie Ellis (26 saves).
“We looked for them to dump the puck in early and really tried to wear them down, but St. Dom’s did an excellent, excellent job of keeping the puck in our zone and really trapping us in there,” Biddeford coach Ashley Potvin said.
“The job is to keep them pinned in and take advantage of any turnovers,” Gosselin said. “I think we were able to do that.”
With their forward rotation down to four, the Saints slowed the game down in the second period to save its legs. Biddeford widened its shot advantage to 23-11 and took a 2-1 lead when Ann-Marie Rowe collected the puck behind the net over Fillebrown’s left shoulder and found Brea Rivard in front of the net for a one-timer.
Tiffany Gagne made it a two goal lead for the Tigers 3:01 into the third off a rebound of a Dumoulin shot.
St. Dom’s got its second wind and dominated the third period, outshooting Biddeford, 15-6.
