ORONO — The University of Maine men’s basketball team had six players in double figures as the Black Bears cruised to a 97-42 win over Fisher on Thursday evening in the Memorial Gym.
Maine is now 3-5 on the year while Fisher falls to 4-5. Alasdair Fraser led the way for Maine with his second double-double of the season of 13 points, 14 rebounds and four assists.
Maine controlled the game from the start, taking a 21-4 lead to open the game courtesy of seven points from Xavier Pollard.
Pollard had 10 points to lead the scoring and Fraser added seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Wentworth 74, Newbury 67
BOSTON — Seniors Corey Therriault of Auburn and Colin Johnson scored 16 and 15 points, respectively to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s basketball team to its fifth straight win, a 74-67 triumph over Newbury in non-conference action at Tansey Gymnasium on Thursday.
After Leopard senior Dailon Wilson scored the opening basket, the Nighthawks got three straight points from senior Peterson Bernard to take a 3-2 lead with 17:17 left.
Wentworth responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes and took a 13-3 lead on a Johnson steal and layup. During the run, Johnson had five points while freshman Cam Sennick of Wilton had four.
St. Joe’s 69, Rivier, 50
STANDISH — Saint Joseph’s College (4-2, 1-1 GNAC) defeated Rivier University (4-3, 0-2 GNAC), 69-50, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Harold Alfond Center on Thursday night.
Sophomore guard Steve Simonds went 5-7 from three-point distance and netted a game-high 17 points in the victory.
Entering the contest having lost two straight games, the Monks returned to the win column with the help of stout defensive play and excellent shooting from beyond the arc. Saint Joseph’s scored 21 points off 16 Rivier turnovers with 12 steals in the first half and headed into intermission with a 33-20 lead.
Women’s basketball
Colby 54, UNE 53
BIDDEFORD — Sophomore Jamie Wallace broke up a tie game on a jumper from the right corner with less than a minute to play and Colby College held on in the final seconds for a 54-53 victory over the University of New England in non-conference women’s basketball action Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.
An empty trip for the Nor’easters and a pair of free throws by Mules junior Jen Nale made it 54-50 with 20 seconds left, only to see UNE first-year Sadie DiPierro pulled the hosts to within one (54-53) just five ticks later with a trey from the left corner.
Colby missed the front-end of a one-and-one at the free throw line and Big Blue controlled the ensuing rebound, but UNE’s game-winning shot attempt rattled off the side of the rim.
Women’s hockey
St. Anselm 3, Colby 1
WATERVILLE — Saint Anselm College scored two goals in the final 5:10 of the second period and added an empty net goal in a 3-1 non-conference women’s hockey victory over Colby College at Alfond Rink on Thursday night.
Saint Anselm moves to 8-2-2 overall, while the Mules fall to 3-5.
Colby struck first in the game when Samantha Slotnick scored her third goal of the season at 11:22 of the second period off a pass from sophomore defender Carolyn Fuwa, who had her third assist.
