LEWISTON — Police on Thursday arrested a local man suspected of robbing Tim Hortons on Sabattus Street the night before.

Nathan Parker, 22, of Peter Boulevard, was captured on Campus Avenue at about 5 p.m. after tips led police to his location. He was charged with robbery.

The arrest ended a long search that started Wednesday night when the suspect led police on a foot chase before disappearing into the woods around Garcelon Bog.

Police said Parker walked into Tim Hortons at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday and ordered coffee and a doughnut before robbing the clerk. Witnesses said the suspect showed the clerk a note in which he threatened to kill her if she did not hand over cash from the register.

Parker fled on foot, but almost from the beginning, police knew who they were looking for. His image, investigators said, was captured by Tim Hortons’ security system.

“They have excellent surveillance cameras there,” Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle said. “That was very helpful.”

Minutes after the heist was reported, officers almost caught up with the suspect behind Holy Family Church farther up Sabattus Street. There, police said, Parker had tried to get a ride from a woman, who refused to let him into her car.

The chase continued near Farwell Street before the suspect slipped into the woods near Garcelon Bog. Police used a tracking dog to search the woods but were unable to find the suspect Wednesday night.

Police said Parker knew where he was going as he fled from police.

“He’s very familiar with the area,” McGonagle said, “and he’s not afraid of the woods.”

For the remainder of the night and all day Thursday, police searched for Parker, whom they had developed as their suspect in the robbery. Just after sundown, police found him on Campus Avenue, arrested him and took him to the Androscoggin County Jail where he was being booked later Thursday night.

Police in Lewiston are familiar with Parker, who has previous convictions for charges that include burglary and theft.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken in the Wednesday night robbery, police said. The clerk was not hurt.
