AUBURN — The hockey puck can be a slippery piece of rubber when it wants to be. Unfortunately for Lewiston, it decided the third period of a hard-fought game with Leavitt/Edward Little would be a good time.

Emma Martineau’s shot squirted through the pads of Lewiston goalie Brianna Lajoie 2:35 into the third period to break a 1-1 tie and sent the unbeaten Red Hornets to a 3-1 win over the Blue Devils.

Taylor Landry scored twice for the Red Hornets (5-0), including an empty-netter that sealed it with 8.6 seconds left.

Landry’s first goal made it 1-0 at 8:10 of the first period.

ewiston kept its line shifts short and skated with a lot of energy in the second period and Sam Cote tied it at 9:40 of the second.

The Devils (2-3) had a chance for the lead when Erica Lemieux was awarded a penalty shot at 9:18, but the sophomore’s wrister sailed high over goalie Tori Sanford.

Lewiston went on the power play midway through the third to try to tie it up, but Sanford sent back a couple of bids with kick saves. The Devils called time out with 1:26 to go and pulled Lajoie with 52.9 seconds remaining but couldn’t mount a serious threat before Landry netted the insurance goal off a turnover.
