AUBURN — It was a power play without a whole lot of power.

It was the chance the Leavitt/Edward Little girls were hoping for late in regulation Wednesday, but the man advantage didn’t produce a whole lot.

But the effort was there, and when the Red Hornets started to get some puck movement late in the power play, it paid off moments later.

Amanda Grenier pounced on a loose puck and buried it with 37 seconds left in regulation to lift the Red Hornets to a 2-1 win over Brunswick.

“We just crowded around the net,” Grenier said. “I just saw it bounce of Taylor (Landry’s) skate. I saw the open net, and I just shot it right in.”

The Red Hornets had only produced one quality shot on the late power play. The best scoring chance was in fact a Brunswick shorthanded bid by Rachel Moroney that was saved with 2:10 left.

The Red Hornets did manage to work the puck into the offensive zone and get some movement and pressure around the net. Though the power play expired, the Red Hornets were still threatening. Shelbea Russell’s shot from the point was knocked down in front, but Grenier didn’t miss.

“I just tried not to hit it at the girls’ skate because there was a girl standing right there, and I didn’t want to hit her skate,” Grenier said.

The win lifted the Red Hornets to 6-0. A pretty good milestone for the club.

“It was anybody’s game right to the end,” Red Hornets coach Shon Collins said. “I’m proud of them. We’re 6-0. They need to be really proud of that fact. It’s the best start I think the team has ever started a season with.”

Though the Red Hornets outshot Brunswick 29-6, it was a struggle to get past the Dragons. Brunswick played a solid defensive game and made it tough for the Red Hornets.

“In general, we weren’t really here tonight,” Collins said. “We weren’t fully focused and didn’t have a lot of energy. We were trying to fight the whole night with the girls trying to get them going the way we can.”

After outshooting Brunswick 10-1 in the first, the Red Hornets took the lead at 2:35 of the second. That was after Eliza Brooks had a point-blank bid stopped by Red Hornet goalie Tori Sanford.

The Red Hornets goal came after Russell set up Landry for a wrister at the right circle.

A late penalty in the period gave Brunswick the chance to tie it. Moroney buried one from the right side with 2:55 left for the equalizer.

The Red Hornets outshot Brunswick 11-1 in the third but couldn’t break the tie until the final minute.

“Brunswick did really well clogging up the neutral zone and getting a lot of traffic in front of the net in their zone,” Collins said. “Their goalie (Claire Mendes) worked hard. She takes up a lot of the net and does well with her angles. That makes you get a little more puck movement to beat her, and we didn’t have that enough.”
