OXFORD — Voters on Wednesday approved a bond of up to $20,225,000 to pay for a wastewater treatment facility on Route 26.

Residents at the special town meeting also voted to change the zoning ordinance to allow for the treatment facility. They also voted to replace the Oxford Pawnbrokers Ordinance with a new version meant to help police track stolen valuables.

The hearing lasted about 15 minutes, with a few residents questioning why changes mentioned at a Nov. 20 public hearing hadn’t been added. Town Manager Michael Chammings said the pawnbrokers ordinance could be amended at the next regular town meeting.

The discussion was cut short by a motion to move the question. All three measures passed nearly unanimously, with a few dissenting votes.

The bond decision allows the town treasurer, Chammings, and the chairman of the Board of Selectmen to issue general obligation bonds up to $20,225,000 for capital improvements. The town plans to build a modern wastewater facility in Welchville village in two phases.

Chammings has said a Tax Increment Financing district on Route 26 will pay for the majority of the facility.
