LEWISTON — City councilors could vote to rename a downtown park in honor of former city councilor and mayoral candidate Mark Paradis.
Councilors are scheduled to vote on the new name for Pierce Street Park at their Dec. 18 meeting. The park is at 180 Pierce St.
The city has begun renovations to the park, part of a joint planning effort by the city’s Neighborhood Advisory Committee and the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council.
Youth council members met with children playing in the park to find out how they used it and what they wanted.
Part of the work involved a naming contest among the city’s elementary school students. Lewiston Middle School seventh-grade student Nicole Morin submitted Paradis’ name, suggesting it be used to honor him for his community service.
Paradis served three terms as a city councilor, and spent years serving on other committees and boards, such as the Planning Board.
Contest winner Morin, Paradis’ widow, Ronella, and his son, Phillip, are expected to attend the council’s Dec. 18 meeting.
