RUMFORD — A “pay it forward” effort this month by Rumford Paper Co. employees is making a difference locally.
Employees donated money for their “12 Days of Giving” this holiday season to buy gifts that recipients could use to pay forward, Jane Bubar, Rumford Hospital spokeswoman, said Thursday in a news release.
They chose to donate 80 skeins of yarn to the Rumford Hospital Caring Stitchers, who craft lap robes called comfort covers that are given to every inpatient at the hospital, Bubar said.
Additional recipients of the paper company employees’ generosity were elderly people who had their oil tanks filled, soldiers overseas who received Maine-made wreaths, and a homeless family who were placed in a home, she said.
Employees also helped set up and serve at the Rumford Community Home and brought Santa along with them, Bubar said. And they’re not done yet.
“They plan to go to local stores and pick shoppers at random and purchase the items in their carts,” Bubar said. “They will target people buying coats, mittens and hats.”
She said Rumford Paper Co. employees also donated 86 turkeys to area food pantries.
“All together, the employees have raised and distributed over $10,000 this year,” Bubar said.
