DIXFIELD — Police are investigating a recent hit-and-run accident at Dirigo High School and the theft of more than $10,000 in jewelry from an antique store.

Sgt. Jeff Howe said Friday afternoon that an 18-year-old Dixfield resident and DHS graduate attempted to drive an older model Mercury Grand Marquis between the school building and its support pillars earlier this month. He declined to name the teen.

“We do have a confession,” Howe said of the Dec. 1 case that was initially reported to police as criminal mischief. However, further investigation revealed that it was actually a car accident, he said.

Howe said that after the Mercury damaged the pillars, the driver left the scene.

On Dec. 7 at 2:56 p.m., police were notified of a burglary at an antique shop on Main Street that is being used for storage, Howe said.

On investigating, he said a large amount of mostly silver jewelry valued at more than $10,000 was stolen, along with miscellaneous silver, some old coins and a Nintendo Wii game set. Police have two suspects.
