Famed swordfisherman and best-selling author Linda Greenlaw finds herself in turbulent waters once again.

This time, at age 40-plus, America’s only female swordfish boat captain, featured in the book and film “The Perfect Storm,” faces the challenges of raising a deeply troubled teen.

Greenlaw’s memoir, “Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mother,” recounts the trials and tribulations Greenlaw experiences after taking in Mariah, a 15-year-old who flees from her uncle’s house on Isle au Haut, after suffering sexual and emotional abuse.

Used to her solitude and independence, Greenlaw isn’t exactly the picture of maternal warmth. In “Lifesaving Lessons,” a candid and tenderly funny memoir, Greenlaw writes about the frustrations and doubts that any parent experiences and recounts the feelings of pride and love that develop as she and Mariah slowly begin to trust one another and see eye to eye.

Greenlaw is the author of three New York Times best-selling nonfiction books along with two mysteries and a cookbook. She is consulting on a fisheries development program in Kenya, where she is helping to design boats and train Kenyans on how to use modern gear and sustainable methods.

Viking publishing is scheduled to release “Lifesaving Lessons” in March.
